Most people are shocked that they can successfully grow citrus in Coastal North Carolina. I’m here to tell you, yes you can, and I can show you how!
Citrus Varieties
I have access to a lot of citrus varieties, so if there is something you’ve always wanted, I can likely get it. With that said I have a number of varieties available that will grow really well here in Coastal North Carolina. I typically have the following varieties available:
Grow Your Own Satsumas
Owari Satsuma & Brown Select Satsuma
Satsumas are a cold hardy citrus that grows very well in-ground here in Coastal NC. Their fruit are easy peel, have a decent amount of juice and are great for eating fresh out of hand.
Grow Your Own Mandarins
Kishu Mandarin & Shiranui Mandarin
Mandarins are a great fruit to grow here, they are not only cold hardy but incredibly good to eat fresh out of hand. Both Kishu and Shiranui / Dekopon produce sweet seedless, easy peel fruit.
Grow Your Own Grapefruit
Ruby Red & Croxton Grapefruit
Grapefruit trees will grow into a larger citrus tree that get loaded with fruit. Ruby Red is a well known grocery store quality fruit and Croxton produces a sweeter tasting grapefruit with less bitterness.
Learn How To Grow Citrus In Containers
If you don’t have the ability or room to grow citrus trees in the ground, growing them in containers is a great option. Growing citrus in containers allows you to grow almost any variety you could want because it allows you to move them inside or otherwise protect them when it gets cold outside.
Learn How To Grow Citrus In the Ground
If you choose the right cold hardy varieties you can successfully grow citrus trees in the ground here in Coastal NC. Varieties like Satsumas, Mandarins, Kumquats, and Grapefruit are great options that can be grown in ground here with minimal winter protection.
